Fish damage assessment during the passage through traditional and fish-friendly axial-flow pumps with Lagrangian tracking approach

چکیده

A large number of fish are prone to death during the passage through pumping stations according monitoring data, especially when axial-flow pumps equipped. This study comprises assessment damage for traditional pump and redesigned so-call fish-friendly pump. The Lagrangian tracking approach combined with computational fluid dynamics that takes profile contact force into account is used shed light on motion behaviors. three most important mechanisms injury (i.e. strike blade leading edge, pressure reduction shear force) discussed. Results show reduced blades leads sharp drop probability its spiral-shaped edges effectively alleviate impact force. Pressure demonstrated be severer in domain rotating impeller compared other components, numerically proven unlikely pose a threat survival at design condition. present offers evaluation framework which can applied aquatic organism, hand points optimization achieve goal ecological protection.

Phosphorus uptake by Microcystis during passage through fish guts

Herbivorous fish feed on cyanobacteria. Digestability differs, however, between cyanobacteria species without mucous cover and mucilaginous genera such as Microcystis. The latter can pass fish guts almost undamaged, and it has been hypothesized that they can take up nutrients during gut passage. Here we tested whether live Microcystis, as food for juvenile roach labeled with 33P, indeed showed ...

A novel marine bioinvasion vector: Ichthyochory, live passage through fish

Many species of Indo-Pacific holobenthic foraminifera have been introduced and successfully established sustainable populations in the Mediterranean Sea over the past few decades. However, known natural and anthropogenic vectors do not explain how these species were introduced long distances from their origin. We present evidence for a novel marine bioinvasion vector explaining this long-distan...

Axial Muscle Development in Fish

In the axial musculature of adult fish two major populations of muscle fibres lay anatomically separated: 1) a triangular red zone at the level of the horizontal septum composed of red fibres and 2) the largest part of the myotome that is filled with the white muscle bulk. The first locomotion of newly hatched fish larvae is probably powered by the red fibres and results in continuous stationar...

Heavy metals bioaccumulation in fish of southern Iran and risk assessment of fish consumption

Background: This study purposed to assess the health risks of heavy metals including nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), and lead (Pb) in three widely-consumed fish from the coast of Bandar Abbas (Persian Gulf) and to determine the maximum amounts allowed for consumption according to the degree of contamination. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the summer and fall of ...
